Student Instruction Discussion Questions

1. How do you decide which tactile communication strategies (coactive signs, sign on body, tactile signs, touch cues, object cues, textured symbols) to use with a student who is deaf-blind?

How can a child who is deaf-blind differentiate between a touch cue and a tactile sign?

How do you determine which mode of sensory input provides the most useful information in a particular context for a child who is deaf- blind?

4. How do you determine whether to use a textured symbol or object cue so that the child will understand what it represents?

5. How do you know what a child is learning (e.g., understands language/communication input)? How do you determine the next step?

6. What challenges have you encountered in adapting visual materials or activities so that they are accessible to a child who is deaf-blind?

7. How do you explain the differences between hand-over-hand and hand-under-hand guidance and when do you use them?

8. What methods have you found effective in training teaching assistants/interveners to use tactile strategies with students who are deaf-blind?
